Wenger opens stadium named after him in French region where he grew up

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was today in the Alsace region of France to inaugurate the ‘Stade Arsene Wenger’.

The Frenchman was invited to the village of Duppigheim to open the stadium, which is situated 20 kilometres south-west of Strasbourg, where the Gunners boss was born.

On his arrival, Wenger signed t-shirts and posed for pictures with around 600 people in attendance, while a plaque dedicated to the Arsenal manager was on display clearly marking out the venue as ‘Stade Arsene Wenger’.

Wenger said: “It’s an honour. I am a little surprised.”

In a bid to encourage local youngsters to dream big, he added: “When I was a kid, I did not think that I would become the coach of a big club.”

The 500-seater stadium will play host to local team USL Duppigheim and club presidenyt Peter Troeesch believes more clubs in the region should honour Wenger’s success in football this way.

“He deserves to have one in every village in Alsace and France,” said Troesch.
