Hummels Throws Jibe At Arsenal, Man City After Champions League Exits

Borussia Dortmund defender, Matts Hummels appeared to aim subtle dig at Premier League clubs following their failures to advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League and the Europa League.

After eliminating Lille to advance to the Europa Conference League semi-finals, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa became the only English team to advance from this week’s continental fixtures.

On Wednesday night, 14-time champion Real Madrid eliminated holders Manchester City from the Champions League, while Bayern Munich defeated Arsenal.

With their 3-1 aggregate victory over West Ham in the Europa League, Bundesliga winners Bayer Leverkusen became the second German team to eliminate English opposition. Liverpool also lost to Italian team Atalanta.

Due to the current results, Germany is more likely to be rewarded with a fifth slot in the redesigned Champions League next season ahead of England. With Italy having already been confirmed as the beneficiaries of the new qualifying system.

After an incredible comeback against Atletico Madrid, Dortmund joined Bayern in the Champions League semi-finals. This marks the first time in 29 years that three German teams have advanced this far in the European semifinals in the same season.

Hummels made a lighthearted reference to Premier League supporters who dismiss the Bundesliga as a “farmers league”. Due to its perceived inferior quality and strength in depth compared to the English top flight when he posted, “Good harvesting this week, my fellow farmers.”

The Champions League semi-finals do not feature any teams from the Premier League for the second time since 2017. Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, bemoaned a “painful” evening as his team lost 1-0 to Bayern.
