Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defended his most unique training tactics following the viral video of his players balancing pens between their fingers while dribbling. The Spaniard insists that these one-of-a-kind workouts are intended to create clarity and dedication within the group as they strive to overcome recent domestic cup defeats.
Footage came from the Gunners’ London Colney training complex, showing their stars working in groups to keep possession of the ball while avoiding dropping pens held between their fingers. This unique training occurred as the Gunners prepared for their crucial Champions League quarter-final first leg against Sporting CP in Lisbon. The drill is the most recent in a long series of unusual psychological and physical challenges introduced by the manager to keep his players mentally sharp during high-pressure moments of the season.

Arteta is well-known for his unique thinking, having previously employed light bulbs and professional pickpockets to deliver motivating messages to his staff. Despite popular interest in his innovative strategy, the 44-year-old declined to share the particular symbolic significance of the pens, preferring to focus on the overarching goal of squad unity.
Arteta, speaking ahead of the Sporting match, said: “Instead of panicking, understand why it happened and bring clarity. There’s always going to be a question mark and that’s it. You have to live in the present, you have to deliver it every day. That’s the standard we set and that’s part of our identity and it’s part of this football club. A training session has to have different elements, and it has to be related to the messages we send and the compromises and commitments we’ve done between us.
