Iran international Mehdi Torabi could be forced out of the 2026 World Cup after reports claimed his United States visa expired after just one appearance at the tournament.
The issue reportedly surfaced following Iran’s 2-2 draw with New Zealand in Los Angeles. Torabi, who remained an unused substitute during the match, is said to have been granted a single-entry visa, unlike the multiple-entry permits issued to most of his teammates.

The 31-year-old travelled with the Iranian squad to the United States for the opening fixture before the team was instructed to return immediately to Mexico after the match.
According to reports, the unexpected travel arrangements have now created complications regarding Torabi’s eligibility to re-enter the US for future World Cup fixtures.
Iranian Federation Races to Resolve Visa Problem
Iran’s football federation is reportedly attempting to obtain a replacement visa as quickly as possible to ensure Torabi can continue participating in the competition.
However, there is growing concern that he could miss upcoming group-stage matches if the situation is not resolved promptly.
State news agency IRNA reported that Torabi’s visa expired after the team’s trip to Los Angeles. While the agency did not confirm whether a new visa had been issued, it stated that all members of the Iranian delegation were on the flight back to Mexico following the match.
The visa issue comes amid wider travel difficulties affecting Iran’s World Cup campaign, reports Express.
Head coach Amir Ghalenoei recently criticised the disruption caused by travel restrictions and scheduling changes, claiming his squad had been treated unfairly compared to other teams at the tournament.
Neither FIFA nor US authorities have publicly commented on Torabi’s situation. For now, Iran remain focused on finding a solution before their next World Cup fixture, with the winger’s tournament future hanging in the balance.
