Mexico began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa at the Estadio Azteca, but one of the biggest talking points came from the introduction of 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora.
Mora entered the match in the 65th minute and instantly etched his name into Mexican football history, reports dogonews.
At just 17 years and 240 days old, he became the youngest player ever to represent Mexico at a World Cup, breaking a record that had stood since the inaugural tournament in 1930.
The midfielder is also the youngest player competing at the 2026 World Cup and the sixth-youngest footballer ever to appear in the tournament’s history.
Despite the attention surrounding his debut, Mora delivered a composed performance. Tasked with helping Mexico control possession and manage the tempo of the game, the youngster completed all 14 of his attempted passes after coming on.
Rapid Rise Through the Ranks
Born in Chiapas in October 2008, Mora is the son of former professional footballer Gilberto Mora Sr., who now works as a youth coach at Club Tijuana.

His performances earned him a call-up to the senior national team in 2025, making him the youngest player ever selected by Mexico at senior level. Later that year, he helped Mexico win the CONCACAF Gold Cup, becoming the youngest footballer to lift a senior international trophy.
By the time he arrived at the World Cup, Mora had already accumulated 53 professional appearances and scored 10 goals.
