Tottenham Set To Battle Man United For £39M-Rated Defender

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to compete with Manchester United for the signing of OGC Nice defender, Jean-Clair Todibo in the January transfer window.

With Cristian Romero serving a three-match suspension and Micky van de Ven being out until the new year due to a hamstring injury, the north Londoners have been beset by an injury crisis at the back in recent weeks.

Manager Ange Postecoglou was forced to start a defense composed solely of full-backs against Aston Villa on Sunday. Despite a determined effort, the team suffered a loss for the third time in a row.

Eric Dier is the only other senior center-back at Postecoglou’s disposal. But his contract expires in the summer, and he has a history of being completely excluded from the matchday squad.

In the summer, Tottenham attempted to add another central defender but failed to come to a deal with Bayer Leverkusen for Edmond Tapsoba. At the same time, they moved too late to persuade Bournemouth to part with Lloyd Kelly.

When the transfer window reopens, Spurs will look to strengthen their dearth of defensive options. The Evening Standard as cited by The Metro reports that they are now considering Nice star Todibo.

The France international is having a fantastic campaign so far with his club. The 1-0 victory over Toulouse on Sunday maintained the team’s unbeaten start to the season. They are currently only one point behind PSG in second place in Ligue 1.

Todibo, 23, is reportedly attracting interest from Liverpool as well. Nice could consider an offer in the neighborhood of £39 million which may bring in more suitors to the table.
