Premier League Defender Reveals Bayern Transfer Truth After £12.8M Bid

Newcastle United defender, Kieran Trippier has revealed his amazement when Bayern Munich show interest in him in the January transfer window.

During the winter window, Newcastle turned down a £12.8 million bid for Trippier from the Bundesliga champions. The England international stayed at the St James’ Park. And Bayern formally abandoned their interest in the right-back.

The 33-year-old made 88 appearances for Newcastle after joining the team for £12 million in January 2022 from Atletico Madrid, most of them as captain. Trippier’s contract expires in the summer of next year. But the Magpies were determined to hold onto the player even in January.

What Did Trippier Say About His Failed Move To Bayern?

According to the Shield Gazzette, while reflecting on the transfer saga, Trippier said: “Not really [difficult]. It was actually crazy, to be honest, because I was in New York. And I was woken up at 5am their time saying, ‘Bayern Munich want to sign you’, so I was like, ‘This is a bit random’.

“I never thought at 33-year-old that Bayern Munich would want to sign me, so it was more of a shock to me than anybody.

“Then I just got on the phone to the manager straight away. And to be honest, the manager knows the commitment I’ve got for the club. I never once tried to force a move out of the club.

“I’m here now and the owners know the commitment I have shown to the club.”

Trippier will be aiming to help the Magpies to a European qualification as they are currently 10th in the Premier League standings.

Newcastle will play Manchester City next in the quarter final of the FA Cup. A win over Pep Guardiola’s side will give them a shout to win their first major trophy in almost 69 years.
