“Next Chelsea Captain Must Be A Starter,” Says Blues Legend

Following Cesar Azpilicueta’s departure from the club, club legend John Terry has offered his opinion on the Chelsea captaincy situation.

After the final year of his contract was waived, Azpilicueta, who had been the Blues’ captain since 2019, made the decision to sign with Atletico Madrid as a free agent. That now leaves the captaincy up for a big decision-making by incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea legend, John Terry has weighed in on social media, saying that whomever receives the honor must play every single week.

The former England player stated on Twitter: “The Captain 100% has to play every week, if your not playing and performing every week it’s difficult to demand from others if your not doing it yourself.”

Pochettino will make a final choice on his new captain around the conclusion of preseason once he has built a closer relationship with his players, that according to the Evening Standard.

Veteran defender Thiago Silva, who previously assumed leadership during Azpilicueta’s absence, is a ‘clear frontrunner’ to take over.

It’s believed that Reece James, Raheem Sterling and Kepa Arrizabalaga are also on Pochettino’s list.

When asked if he had any ideas who he wants to captain the club, the Argentine said: “First of all we need to build the squad. And then I need to look at all the players before making a decision.

“I need to feel the players, feel the commitment, the character, the personality. One thing is we are working with them for positive and not so positive.

“First of all we need to close the club and the squad and then we have many players with experience and we will decide.”
