Manchester United’s Declaration Suggests One Transfer This Summer

Manchester United released their end-of-season retained list on Monday, indicating that they are in negotiations with veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton about a new contract.

The immensely experienced shot-stopper, 39, had been considering his future with his current contract about to expire at the end of this month, but United’s decision to try to keep him means he might stay at Old Trafford past his 40th birthday.

Despite not making a competitive game for United in over two years, Heaton remains an important component of the squad. It is known that he is willing to stay at the club for another year.

The former Burnley and Cardiff City goalkeeper joined United again in July 2021, signing a two-year contract. At the time, he joined a goalkeeping pool that already included David de Gea, Dean Henderson, and Lee Grant.

Since then, the landscape of United’s goalkeeping staff has shifted slightly, although Heaton has remained a constant fixture. He is a well-liked member of the squad and has held leadership positions.

During Heaton’s second spell at the club, De Gea has been supplanted as United’s number one by Andre Onana, while Altay Bayindir has taken second place in the pecking order since joining from Fenerbahce at the conclusion of the 2023 summer transfer window.

Despite having their moments in the spotlight, neither has proven compelling enough to keep their roles without being questioned.

That is why, as reported by the Manchester Evening News in January, United are anticipated to look for a new goalkeeper this summer.
