Manchester United Want Gary O’Neil Talks Over Possible Coaching Role

ESPN reporter Mark Ogden claims that Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil are set to discuss Ogden’s possible coaching position at Old Trafford.

The recent minority takeover of INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe may mean multiple changes for the Red Devils, both on and off the field, in the months ahead.

In the midst of a challenging 2023–24 season that has seen Man Utd struggle in the Premier League and Champions League, current head coach Erik ten Hag is under pressure to establish himself. O’Neil is having a great first season with Wolves and has the potential to finish in the top half.

Man Utd ‘want to speak’ to O’Neil

Mark Ogden reports that Manchester United want to discuss a possible coaching position at Old Trafford with Wolves manager Gary O’Neil. According to sources, the Red Devils’ new management, which is being directed by Sir Dave Brailsford, director of sport at INEOS, is trying to “build a new coaching structure” that will be managed by a new head coach.

Erik ten Hag’s future is still up in the air, but Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton & Hove Albion, Thomas Frank of Brentford, and England manager Gareth Southgate have already been ‘assessed’ as possible successors to the Dutchman, whose team is currently sixth in the Premier League after finishing bottom of their Champions League.

After taking over less than a week before their first game after Julen Lopetegui’s departure, O’Neil, hailed as a “phenomenal” manager, has experienced a successful season in his maiden campaign at Wolves, moving a team tipped for a relegation struggle into European contention. The former head coach of AFC Bournemouth is reportedly aware of Manchester United’s interest, however it’s unclear what kind of job they could be willing to provide.
