Manchester United Leading The Race To Sign Diogo Costa

Manchester United are reportedly the first in line to sign Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

The 23-year-old came up through Porto’s youth system, first playing for their B side before becoming the club’s number one goalkeeper for the 2021-22 season.

Costa has been in fine form for his Portuguese club this season, appearing in 13 games across all competitions and keeping seven clean sheets.

The Portugal international’s contract with the Blue and Whites expires in four years, but there is said to be a €60m (£52m) release clause in his current contract.

A lot of clubs have been linked with the goalkeeper, but according to Diario de Noticias, via Sport Witness
Manchester United are leading the race to sign him in 2023.

According to the report, Costa’s recent form has ‘activated the radars’ of a number of major clubs in European football.

David de Gea is still Manchester United’s number one goalkeeper, but his long-term future is doubtful, with his contract set to expire next June.

The 31-year-old recently stated his intention to sign a new contract at Old Trafford, stating that he wants to stay with the Red Devils “for more years.”

However, Benfica’s Odysseas Vlachodimos has been linked with a move to Manchester as a possible long-term successor for De Gea.

Costa is also reportedly being considered, after shining in Porto’s recent Champions League victories over Bayer Leverkusen, where he provided an assist last week.

Former Porto midfielder Maniche believes the Dragons would struggle to maintain Costa for long due to increased demand in his services.

Man United will look to make it four straight wins in all competitions when they host Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
