Ivan Toney Hit With Eight-Month Ban From Football Over Betting Breaches

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been banned from football for eight months after admitting to 232 breaches of the FA’s rules on betting.

The 27-year-old was initially charged with 262 breaches of the FA’s betting rules, but the governing body later dropped 30 of the charges against him.

Toney has pled guilt on the other 232 charges, which occurred between February 2017 and January 2021 while he was a player for Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United, and Brentford.

As a result, Toney has been suspended from football and all football-related activities until January 17, 2024, however he can resume training with Brentford on September 17.

The England international was also fined £50,000 and warned about his future conduct.

The FA said in a statement, “His sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a personal hearing.”

“He is permitted to return to training only with his club for the final four months of his suspension starting from 17 September 2023.

“The independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course, and The FA will wait to review them before commenting further.”

Toney has been one of the greatest scorers in the Premier League this season, netting 20 goals for the Bees. The specifics of his alleged betting offenses have not been made public, and while he stated that he would issue a longer statement once they were, he indicated that he would accept his suspension and penalties.

In response, Brentford stated that they are awaiting the formal written reasons for the decision before deciding what to do next.

Toney’s suspension will take effect immediately, meaning he will be unable to play in Brentford’s final two Premier League games.
