His excellent work at Molineux has further improved his reputation, and according to recent sources, Manchester United is now seeking to add O’Neil to their coaching staff, in addition to current manager Erik ten Hag. The head coach of Wolves is now being considered as a potential option for Liverpool’s ongoing hunt for a new manager.

Former Watford striker Troy Deeney told talkSPORT, “I’m going to throw a name at you – I think [Liverpool] need a coach next year more than a manager, so I’m going to say Gary O’Neil.”

“They might be left with a very youthful group if the rumors about three or four of the key players leaving are accurate. It might be a squad that benefits from a younger coach that is accustomed to working with younger players and doesn’t have high expectations for winning the league. We would anticipate Liverpool to remain in the top four if someone like [Roberto] De Zerbi entered the game.”

Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon and Brighton manager De Zerbi are undoubtedly the front-runners, but Deeney is certain that O’Neil possesses the necessary qualifications for the position.
