Gary Neville: The Cristiano Ronaldo Issue Is Complicated For Everyone

Gary Neville has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to fully disclose his future at Manchester United as he believes the “messy” situation has caused a major distraction to Erik Ten Haag with the season starting already.

Ronaldo has asked to quit United and has barely played 45 minutes of pre-season football due to family obligations that kept him off the club’s summer tour.

Ten Hag revealed that Anthony Martial will miss Sunday’s match against Brighton due to injury but refused to indicate if Ronaldo will start in his place. The only immediate striker replacements for Martial are Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford, unless Ten Hag decides to play a false nine like he did throughout the preseason.

What Did Neville Say About Ronaldo?

Ronaldo reportedly wants to leave United in order to play for a club playing in the Champions League next season, but Neville believes the Portuguese should clarify his position to supporters at a time when the club is in desperate need of stability.

The Ronaldo situation is distracting, Neville said during Friday Night Football. You saw Ten Hag in the press conference on Friday having to answer questions about it.

“The fact Anthony Martial has got injured and he is the only other centre forward, and he actually was going to leave the club six months ago.

“The fact they haven’t got Frenkie de Jong in, the fact you haven’t been supported in the way the other managers have and getting the signings early, I think it all means it’s a more difficult job for Ten Hag than it already was.”

When asked if he’d start him as a coach, Neville added: “If Ronaldo is fit you start him, and I hope he stays.
