France’s Raphael Varane Confirms Retirement From International Duty

France and Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from international football.

Varane debuted for France in 2013, and has nearly ten years of experience playing for Les Blues. The center back, who has 93 international appearances for his country, led his team to victory at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The 29-year-old also started in France’s major final failures at Euro 2016 and most recently at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where his team narrowly lost to Argentina on penalties following a 3-3 deadlock after regulation and extra time.

Varane has struggled with injury in recent seasons and his retirement from international football allows him to prioritise United. The decision will also allow Varane to spend more time with his family and his two children, Ruben and Anais.

Varane has made 18 appearances with Erik ten Hag in charge this season. He’s built a formidable partnership with Lisandro Martinez, which has seen United record the joint most clean sheets (16) in Europe from the top five leagues.

Meanwhile, the player’s fellow countryman Hugo Lloris also announced his retirement from international football with France this month.
