Former Arsenal defender, William Gallas stated that William Saliba can sometimes be a ‘disaster’ hence he has not made his mark at international level.
Three years after joining the Gunners from Saint-Etienne, Saliba was later introduced to the first team in the summer of 2022. Since then, the 22-year-old has hardly looked back and has become one of the Premier League’s highest-rated central defenders. That hasn’t, however, resulted in success with the French national team.
Didier Deschamps, the manager of Les Bleus, isn’t totally sold on Saliba. As evidenced by the fact that he frequently gives players like Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate more playing time. This is because he believes they are more effective than the Arsenal star.
Fans of the national team as well as the Gunners haven’t always agreed with that decision. According to The Mirror, former Gunners captain, Gallas has clarified that Saliba cannot expect to automatically be on the France team considering the competition he faces and his own shortcomings.
“Unfortunately, it’s difficult for William Saliba to be in the France eleven because you have Konaté and Upamecano,” he told GFFN. “Sometimes Saliba can be magnificent, but sometimes he can be a disaster as he’s not consistent.
“That’s why it’s a big problem for Didier Deschamps to know exactly who is going to be the number one, or the partnership at centre-back!”

Saliba continues to be excellent at the club level. But even he was unable to stop Bayern Munich from knocking the Gunners out of the Champions League.
With six league games remaining, Saliba will undoubtedly be pivotal to Arsenal’s efforts to turn the team around.
