Erik Ten Hag Opted Against Advice Over Left-Back Transfer

In an effort to address Manchester United’s left back dilemma during the summer transfer window, Erik ten Hag opted for experience over development.

The manager of the Red Devils had a tumultuous end to the summer transfer window, but he managed to secure the loan signings of Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon.

Beginning the summer with left-back one position that seemed relatively set in stone, things suddenly changed with injuries to first and second choice options Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

According to The Athletic, a short list of emergency candidates was created that included Nicolas Tagliafico, Marcos Alonso, and Marc Cucurella; only for the club to end up with Reguilon from Tottenham.

Other club members, however, had other opinions and believed that Alvaro Fernandez, a promising player, was “worth trying.”

While on loan at Preston North End last season, the 20-year-old Spaniard made an impression and was voted the club’s young player of the year.

However, that wasn’t good enough for Ten Hag.

Fernandez’s loan to Granada was close to being called off in the wake of Shaw’s injury, but after the club secured Reguilon for the season, the youngster was allowed to move to LaLiga.

Reguilon and Amrabat were the final arrivals of a summer that also saw Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Jonny Evans and Altay Bayindir also join.

So far this season, United have a record of two wins and two defeats, with Shaw being replaced by Diogo Dalot after a loss to Tottenham.
