Cyberattack Targets PSG Before Champions League Match, As Security Increases After  ISIS Bomb Threat

Wednesday night’s Champions League quarterfinal between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona takes place in the midst of ISIS bomb threats and a recent cyberattack against the French powerhouse.

A top-tier French counterterrorism squad has been deployed to the Parc des Princes in response to ISIS’s threats to target Champions League matches and launch a cyberattack against Paris Saint-Germain.

The BRI research and intervention battalion was stationed at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday for PSG vs. Barcelona in the Champions League, demonstrating how seriously the threats are treated. “Officers from the BRI, under the jurisdiction of the Paris Police Prefecture, will support the police deployed inside the Park des Princes perimeter,” a highly placed Interior Ministry source in Paris stated.

It comes after the so-called ISIS-K, a spinoff of ISIS with headquarters in Afghanistan, threatened cities this week, including London, where games were being held.

The matches between Real Madrid and Manchester City in the Spanish capital and Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium in London went smoothly on Tuesday night, but the French are not taking any chances, particularly since PSG also revealed that their ticketing system had been the target of cyberattacks during the previous two days. This increases the concern that terrorists are trying to enter the 48,000-seat stadium, a police source stated.

The BRI was originally created to deal with violent gangs, but began to focus on terrorist groups in 2015, following the murderous ISIS attacks on Paris.

Suicide bombers claimed 130 lives, and wounded hundreds of others, in a lethal night of violence that started at the Stade de France, where the France football team were playing Germany.
