Chelsea has had a quiet January for 29 days and is expected to continue till the transfer market closes on Monday night (February 2nd).
So technically, we may have a very calm January followed by an explosively loud February.
At least that’s what the rumor mill is betting on, as various tales surfaced on Thursday concerning our alleged pursuit of defender Jérémy Jacquet. Again.
Chelsea were connected with the very highly rated teenager a few weeks ago, with some sources claiming that we had reached personal terms with the 20-year-old. However, any agreement would have required us to shatter Rennes’ club transfer record, which was set a few years back when they paid €60 million to Manchester City for another Jérémy.

We were understandably hesitant to pay that amount, but we may reconsider. According to The Telegraph, we are “still working to try to sign” Jacquet and not only close the deal during this window, but also have him join us immediately. The Ligue 1 team, for their part, appears to be sticking to their record asking price, despite the possibility of Chelsea providing the newly recalled Aarón Anselmino on loan in part exchange.
Fabrizio Romano compares the situation to Chelsea’s pursuit of Enzo Fernández three years ago, when we paid the full asking amount following weeks of trying to negotiate it down.
Of course, the club’s sporting leadership isn’t quite the same as it was back then, when co-owner Todd Boehly was still in charge, so a similar outcome isn’t guaranteed — though spending big on potential is now the primary strategy, and Jacquet would certainly fit that bill.
