Arsenal Could Miss Out On Record Sale, As Folarin Balogun Deal Delays

After what feels like lengthy transfer drama, Arsenal star Folarin Balogun may finally leave the club.

The 22-year-old will return permanently to France’s top level as he is set to join Ligue 1 club AS Monaco.

The move represents his chance to finally get regular minutes this season given his lack of involvement under Mikel Arteta. He excelled abroad with Reims last season on loan from the Gunners, where he struck 21 league goals in 37 games.

Despite an injury in pre-season to star striker Gabriel Jesus, Balogun didn’t move up the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium at all, instead being left to train by himself while Eddie Nketiah racked up two goals over the first three matches this campaign.

“The plan with Flo doesn’t change at all,” Arteta told reporters before the start of the season when questioned over Jesus’ injury and whether the youngster could be utilised in his absence.

“But unfortunately, with Gabby, we’re not going to have him. We have other options to play with different qualities of players, so we will adapt.”

But now, after a race between Chelsea, Fulham, Tottenham and Monaco, the French side seem to have come out on top with the USMNT international reportedly completing his medical yesterday.

Monaco have already had a bid of £34million (€40m) turned down by the Gunners earlier in the transfer window, so many supporters have been wondering just how much they’ll be getting for the 22-year-old who is yet to play under Arteta in the Premier League.

Talks are still being finalised on the deal for the USMNT striker, but it’s possible that the initial fee may not surpass the club’s current record sale. This was the £35m they generated from the departure of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool in 2017.

Potential add-ons are however likely to take the transfer over the £35m mark. It is also expected that a sell on fee will be added into the deal.
