Trevoh Chalobah insisted that Chelsea were “running their socks off” during their humiliating loss to Brighton despite a damning statistic that suggested otherwise.
Brighton defeated the Blues 3-0 at the Amex Stadium, moving them up to sixth place in the Premier League standings and seriously hurt their chances of qualifying for the Champions League thanks to goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood, and substitute Danny Welbeck.
Chelsea have been outrun by their opponents 34 times in 34 games this season (no other side have been outrun more than 29 times), and they are still at the bottom of the distance run per match table with an average of 106.1 kilometers, more than two kilometers less than Nottingham Forest, who are ranked 19th.
Chalobah Disagrees With Stat
“I think the boys were running their socks off,” he said after the defeat as quoted by the Independent.
“If you look in the dressing room, everyone is tired. It’s nothing to do with effort. We gave it our all, got beat today.
Defender Chalobah, however, insisted that the team were running more than enough and rejected any notion that this was an issue.
During the second half of a lacklustre performance in which his team failed to record an attempt on goal, Rosenior was the target of X-rated shouts from the irate away crowd.
Chelsea have now lost five straight league games without scoring for the first time since November 1912.
