Xavi Applauds Barcelona Star After Win Over Rivals

Barcelona head coach, Xavi Hernandez heaped praise on Frenkie de Jong – one of his vital players – for his impressive display in the win over Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames stadium.

The Catalan club restored their nine points lead at the top of the standings with a solitary goal against the Basque region club. Raphinha’s late first half strike was enough to record a victory in a not so good performance from Barcelona.

However, there was some controversy in the match as Inaki Williams had a goal disallowed for handball by VAR, a decision that was contentious with the hosts.

Though, Barcelona had some players who impressed on Sunday night. Marc-Andre ter Stegen made some crucial saves, Alejandro Balde excelled on the left, Raphinha scored another crucial goal, and Sergio Busquets impressed with his defensive responsibilities for Barcelona.

However, Frenkie de Jong appeared to be Barcelona’s best player on the pitch that evening. The Dutchman proved why he has grown to be such a crucial member of the squad by being nimble in the build-up play and producing a few openings for the Blaugrana.

After the final whistle, Xavi spoke to the press and was particular about the display of de Jong.

“De Jong is playing at a spectacular level. He’s one of the best midfielders in the world right now,” Xavi said (h/t BarçaTV+).

Recall, de Jong has been a subject of transfer speculation before the beginning of the season. Manchester United, according to reports had a bid rejected by Barca for him. With impressive performance as the one on Sunday, it is going to be difficult for the Blaugrana club to put him up for sale in the next summer transfer window.
