Wright: Alex Iwobi is “the glue” holding Arsenal

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has praised Alex Iwobi, claiming that the winger is “the glue” in the Gunners’ team.

Iwobi has produced some hugely encouraging performances of late and was named Man of the Match for his excellent display in the 3-0 victory over Chelsea on Saturday.

As reported by The Sun: “I have to say Iwobi, for me, is the glue. He’s the one who gets in those little holes. I was saying that we need something different. He was something different to a Chelsea team that, let’s face it, weren’t at the races and if you aren’t at the races against this Arsenal team, you’re not closing them down, you’re giving them the time to build their confidence, you’re going to get hammered.”

Iwobi is the perfect exponent of Arsenal’s expansive playing style, with the Nigeria international having been successful with 84% of his attempted passes in the Premier League this season.

Arsenal have several options in wide positions, with manager Arsene Wenger able to call upon the likes of Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain, and it is to Iwobi’s credit that he as managed to hold down a place in the starting line-up despite the fierce competition for places.

The Gunners started the season with a disappointing 4-3 defeat to Liverpool, but they have been rather impressive since then, going seven games without defeat across all competitions.
