Wenger: Arsenal fans sent out wrong image of club with protests

Arsene Wenger believes protesting Arsenal fans sent out the wrong image of the club to the world last season.

Wenger was the subject of several Arsenal supporter protests throughout the past campaign as frustrated fans made their views on the long-serving Gunners manager clear via banners, chants and even planes.

The protests, some conducted before and others during matches, came with Wenger’s future remaining uncertain at the time and with Arsenal falling off league leaders Chelsea and then struggling to qualify for Champions League football.

Wenger, 67, has since agreed a two-year contract extension at Arsenal after leading the club to the FA Cup trophy with a win over London rivals Chelsea – days after the Gunners failed to secure a top-four spot.

And the Frenchman has now hit back at fans who called for him to leave Arsenal last season, saying protests against his reign did not look favourably upon the north London club.

“During the game, I think when you are a supporter, and I believe as well that Arsenal is a worldwide respected club and where the togetherness is absolutely important,” he told beIN Sport.

“It’s one of the important values to our club and the image that we have given to the world was not the right one.”
