VIDEO: Ferguson and Old Trafford pay tribute as Van Persie scores on his Man Utd return

Robin van Persie was given a standing ovation from the Manchester United crowd after scoring for Fenerbahce on his return to Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The Dutchman was back at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ for the first time since departing last summer and left the stadium with a moment to remember has he swept home from close range following brilliant work on the left-hand side by Emmanuel Emenike.

As well as the supporters, the man who brought van Persie to the club from Arsenal in 2012 Sir Alex Ferguson also joined in the applause for the striker who played a key role in the club’s Premier League title triumph in his first season at the club.

At the age of 33, van Persie is understandably no longer an automatic choice for club nor country and his goal is only the second time he’s found the back of the net this season.

United were more than comfortable winners on the night as Paul Pogba helped himself to a brace, while Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard also got on the scoresheet.
