Van Gaal: Champions League qualification is now in Man United’s hands

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes that their top fours are in their own hands after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Manchester City.

The Dutchman has had a tough week having been knocked out of the Europa League by Liverpool in what was the most disappointing night of his Man Utd spell to date.

However, he and his side bounced back from disappointment to beat Man City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday to move to within just a single point of their city rivals, who occupy fourth place.

Louis van Gaal stoically stated afterwards that their top four hopes are now back in their hands after recent disappointments, as he looks to secure Champions League football for another season.

“The gap would have been too big if we had drawn or lost. It would have been very difficult,” Van Gaal told reporters, via BBC Sport.

“Now it is in our own hands but we have to win our games. We have more home matches than away and we don’t lose so much at Old Trafford – so we have a big chance.”

Marcus Rashford’s Sergio Aguero-like goal at the Etihad, as he skipped past Martin Demichelis and slid the ball underneath Joe Hart, has put United back in the driving seat in the race for the top four.

Plus, after Liverpool’s defeat at Southampton, it is pretty much a straight shot between the Red Devils, West Ham and Man City for that final Champions League spot with Arsenal set to comfortably finish in the top three with Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
