UEFA Makes The Challenges Of Man United, Chelsea More Embarrassing

According to a UEFA document, Manchester United put together the most expensive squad on record before winning the Carabao Cup last season.

After spending £1.21 billion, the Red Devils assembled a team that lost to Manchester City in the FA Cup final and finished third in the Premier League, 14 points behind their city rivals.

Real Madrid’s previous record is shattered by that amount. The incredible sum of £1.13 billion (€1.33 billion) was spent assembling the 2020 Los Blancos team, which won La Liga in 2019–20.

According to the Daily Express, the state of affairs at Chelsea is also highlighted in a document published by UEFA, titled European Club Finance and Investment Landscape Report.

Along with Manchester City and Real, the Blues are one of three teams that have invested over £855 million (€1 billion) in building their squad.

The January 2023 transfer window, during which Chelsea spent more than £320 million, is not included in the data. The west Londoners finished the Premier League in 12th place. Which was a major underachievement considering their substantial assets.

Despite their significant expenditures over the previous few years, neither United nor the Blues have been able to improve on the pitch this season.

After a miserable start to the season, Erik ten Hag’s team were eliminated from the Champions League group stage. Finishing last and not even making it to the Europa League play-off round.

Despite adding £180 million worth of talent to their roster last summer, United were placed in the mid-table going into Christmas.

Chelsea kept up their summer spending binge, but with mixed results. Data not included in UEFA’s report reveals that the London club spent close to £400 million on transfers alone when Mauricio Pochettino was hired as head coach.
