Tottenham Star Son Heung-Min Becomes One Year Younger Overnight After Law Change

Tottenham hero Son Heung-min may have just seen an increase in his transfer value after becoming a year younger overnight owing to South Korean law.

Son was seen as a year older in his own country due to an unconventional way of age recognition, even though he is 30 according to the international ageing system.

Last year, a bill approved by President Yoon Suk Yeol abolished the practice of giving newborns the age of one and upgrading them to the age of two when there was a change in year.

This would imply that a child who was born in late December and had only been alive for a few days would be regarded as a two-year-old.

The adjustment was implemented to address the centuries-old confusion around the method of aging.

Will Son Leave Tottenham This Summer?

Son, who has 145 goals for Spurs and was the Golden Boot winner in the Premier League in 201/22, turns 31 on July 8.

The attacker, who also serves as the captain of South Korea’s national team, has a deal with the club through 2025, which will take him up to his 33rd birthday and not his 34th.

Despite having an impressive goalscoring record in England, Son is yet to win a major trophy in his professional career.

Those chances have been boosted under new boss Ange Postecoglou with the signing of James Maddison, but Harry Kane could yet depart.

The England skipper has been the subject of a bid from Bayern Munich with a year left on the contract he signed back in 2018.

Son himself was also linked to the exit door at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – with an offer of £100m in wages to move to Saudi Arabia.

However, he said while on international duty: “I have many things to do in the Premier League.

“Money doesn’t matter to me now, and the pride of playing football, to play in my favourite league is important.

“I want to play more for Tottenham.”
