Tottenham in talks with former Chelsea boss Sarri to replace Mourinho

Tottenham have reportedly made an approach for Maurizio Sarri as they go on the lookout for a new manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was sacked from his post in north London on Monday, just six days before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, following an underwhelming season to date that sees them sit seventh in the Premier League and having crashed out of the Europa League at the last-16 stage.

And according to Football Italia, Spurs have contacted Sarri’s representative Fali Ramadani to offer the Italian the job from the beginning of next season.

Despite having been sacked by Juventus last August, Sarri is still under contract with the club until June 2022.

However, the Italian giants can terminate his contract a year early by paying a £2.2million fee by the end of April.

Sarri is desperate to return to management having been dismissed by Juventus following a frustrating 2019-20 campaign, which saw them eliminated by Lyon in the round of 16 stage in the Champions League.

Prior to Sarri’s sacking in Turin, the 62-year-old won the Serie A title while losing the Coppa Italia final to Napoli on penalties.

Tottenham will face competition from a number of Serie A clubs for the Italian’s services, with several currently in talks with Sarri.

Roma are one of his suitors, and are reportedly his preferred destination should he decide to stay in Serie A.

If Tottenham were successful in landing Sarri, it would represent a shock move given his previous relationship with London rivals Chelsea.

Sarri was in charge of Chelsea for the 2018-19 season and won the Europa League while finishing in the Premier League’s top four, but he was never truly appreciated at Stamford Bridge due to his heavily possession-based football, which fans found dull.

La Gazzetta dello Sport last week that revealed Tottenham would meet with Sarri over the possibility of replacing Mourinho.

That report also claimed that Tottenham were initially interested in hiring Sarri in the summer of 2018, when he left Napoli to take over at Stamford Bridge.

But Tottenham also have their eyes elsewhere, and Sarri could be viewed as the back-up if the club don’t get their preferred target.
