Tottenham Confirm Emerson Royal Will Undergo Knee Surgery

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that defender Emerson Royal will undergo surgery after sustaining a knee injury on international duty with Brazil.

The former Barcelona man played 93 minutes of the Selecao’s recent 2-1 friendly loss to Morocco before being replaced by America Mineiro defender Arthur.

The severity of Emerson’s injury was first unclear, but it has now been widely reported that the right wing back will be sidelined for up to six weeks at a critical time in the season.

The club has now confirmed that Emerson will soon undergo surgery, but no timeframe for his recovery has been given. There are concerns that Emerson may not play for Tottenham again until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old has largely deceived in the Premier League since joining in the summer of 2021, but he has shown a marked improvement in performances in the first few weeks of 2023.

Emerson was expected to lose his starting spot to Pedro Porro after the Spaniard’s arrival from Sporting Lisbon, but he kept his counterpart out of the team for the entire month of February with a string of competent performances.

The Brazil international has two goals and one assist under his belt from 22 Premier League appearances this season, taking his total for the Lilywhites to three goals and two assists from 73 games in all tournaments.
