Torres releases statement after sickening head injury

A thankful Fernando Torres has allayed fears over his health and says he hopes to return to action soon after suffering a sickening head injury on Thursday.

The Atletico Madrid striker appeared to be seriously hurt after a coming together with opponent Alex Bergantinos during his side’s 1-1 draw with Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga on Thursday evening.

Torres was knocked unconscious midway through the second half, with players and medics rushing to his aid. Replays showed he was out cold before he had landed after jumping for a header. He was then taken to hospital in the back of an ambulance.

There was serious concern among everyone at the Estadio Riazor – with some players on the verge of tears and others praying for the striker.

Thankfully the news since has been positive with Atletico Madrid stating Torres is conscious and alert.

An initial CT scan came back clear following the former Liverpool and Chelsea player’s hospitalisation.

And Torres – winner of two European Championships and the World Cup – used social media to provide an update on his health.

The Atleti favourite tweeted: “Thank you very much for worrying about me and for your messages of support. It was just a scare. I hope to be back very soon!”

Torres will remain in hospital under observation prior to undergoing further tests on Friday.
