Terry’s substitution uncovers a possible betting scandal in England

Ending his career at Chelsea after 16 years, John Terry was symbolically replaced in the 26th minute of the match against Sunderland by Gary Cahill, however, what could at first be considered a nice homage has become a murky subject that is already under investigation by the English Football Association (FA).

Up to three people managed to win thousands of pounds after betting their money on the Chelsea defender being replaced at exactly that time.

According to the English press, one bookmaker has confirmed that he accepted a 100-to-1 fee for the fact that Terry was replaced in the 26th minute; so the 25 pounds staked became 2,500 for the lucky punter.

FA regulations state that to organise any event within a match beforehand is considered a crime.

Both Terry and Antonio Conte acknowledged they had agreed that the change would occur at that time, while David Moyes also wanted to contribute at the precise moment of the change, giving his players the necessary instructions to throw the ball off the field.

Interestingly this situation was repeated in the past when Didier Drogba was also replaced in his last game as Chelsea player in the same minute that marked his shirt number, 30.
