Tearful John Terry tells Chelsea fans “I want to stay”

A tearful John Terry declared: “I want to stay” but still left Stamford Bridge guessing if he will return next season after Chelsea’s final match of the season.

The club captain, who was suspended for the Leicester match, joined a pre- match guard of honour for the champions and Claudio Ranieri.

And Terry then led a post-match lap of apprecation where he applauded the Chelsea fans and handed out shirts in an apparent farewell.

The former England defender is out of contract but was finally offered a one-year extension on Friday.

He took the microphone in the centre circle as the home crowd chanted: ‘John Terry, we want you to stay.’

Terry said: “ We all want the same team. I’ve said for a long time I want to finish my career here. I’ll be speaking toeh club over the next few days. I want to stay, the club knows that, the fans know that. I want to stay.”

Owner Roman Abramovich applauded from the stands and Terry was then given the bumps by his team-mates.

Terry also said: “I’m delighted Leicester won it and Tottenham haven’t.”

“This has been a difficult season. You stuck through us, as supporters, through thick and thin. We’ve had some great times in recent years, and you’ve been part of that.

“We’ve all accepted things have not been good enough, but we’ll be back next year and we’ll be fighting for this title.

“On a personal note I’ve liked to thank everyone as well.” With tears in his eyes, Terry added: “This season has been tough for me, very emotional, so thank you for the support.

“Chelsea is my life, as it is yours. The best moments of my life have been in this stadium. You’ve been a big part of that. I’d like to say a big thank you to Guus Hiddink.”
