South Korea Stun Portugal To Book Knockouts Spot

South Korea defeated Portugal 2-1 in the 91st minute, securing a spot in the knockout round of the 2022 World Cup.

South Korea, who had head coach Paulo Bento in the stands after his red card against Ghana the previous time out, won it in second-half stoppage time, but they had to wait for Uruguay’s game against Ghana to end before their progression was guaranteed.

Bento’s squad will now face the winner of Group G in the next round, which could be Brazil, Switzerland, Cameroon, or Serbia, on Monday.

Portugal will now try to advance past the round of 16 for the first time since finishing fourth in 2006, but the defeat is a blow despite topping the section.

Horta scored with a brilliant finish following a fantastic run and cross from Diogo Dalot, who was moved into the starting XI with Santos moving his pack, in the fifth minute of the match.

South Korea got the ball in the back of the net against Portugal in the 17th minute through Kim Jin-su, but it was called offside, allowing the European nation to escape after some sloppy defending.

Bento’s team did equalize in the 27th minute, when the ball dropped kindly for Young-gwon inside the Portugal box, and he hammered the ball past Costa from close range.

Santos made three substitutions in the 65th minute, including Ronaldo, and Costa had to make two excellent saves in the minutes that followed, first denying Son then saving a thunderous effort from Hwang In-beom.

South Korea then had to wait for the final whistle in the match between Uruguay and Ghana, which Uruguay won 2-0 but was eliminated on goals scored.
