Sergio Aguero Could Have Joined Chelsea Before Manchester City Move In 2011

Premier League icon Sergio Aguero joined Manchester City in 2011, he claimed that about eighteen months prior, Frank Lampard begged the Chelsea board to sign him.

After scoring 101 goals in 234 games for Atletico Madrid, Aguero made a name for himself as one of the world’s most sought-after young strikers in the late 2000s, according to Metro

Aguero was held by Atleti until the summer of 2011, when they struck a £35 million deal with City, where he would go on to solidify his status as one of the greatest players in the club’s history. Atleti managed to stave off Europe’s best teams.

With his incredible 260 goals, Sergio Aguero leads all other scorers on City’s all-time top scoring rankings. Raheem Sterling is ranked second, 129 goals behind the Argentine.

The first of his five league titles in Manchester occurred in the 94th minute of play as City defeated QPR to win the 2011–12 Premier League trophy. It is also perhaps the most iconic goal in the history of the English top flight.

Aguero Could Have Joined Chelsea

Aguero has admitted that if Lampard had had his way back in 2010—after the illustrious former Chelsea midfielder faced him in the Champions League group stage—his tale might have gone quite differently in a parallel universe.

When Chelsea played Atletico in November 2009 at the Wanda Metropolitano, a youthful Aguero began the match on the bench but quickly replaced Florent Sinama Pongolle in the second half to put the hosts behind the sticks with a thundering volley.

With a fast-paced brace, Didier Drogba appeared to have given Chelsea the win, but Aguero’s late 25-yard free kick turned the tide and prevented the visitors from winning.

After that 2-2 draw in Madrid, Aguero was asked if Chelsea ever had a chance to sign him. He replied, “Yeah, yeah, yeah!” on the The Club YouTube channel.

“Chelsea are interested,” my agent informed me maybe two months after the game.

I was only with Atletico Madrid for three years. Even though I cherished playing in the Premier League, Chelsea never showed any interest in me after that. Yes, initially, but my agency then said, “Okay, maybe not.”

Following his 2014 move from Chelsea to City, Lampard revealed to Aguero how he had pressed Chelsea’s decision-makers to sign him in the first half of 2010.

Aguero continued, “I talked about that with Frank Lampard because Frank Lampard played at Manchester City.”

“He said he told Chelsea’s staff to sign Aguero when I played against him.”
