Ruben Amorim’s former assistant coach says his ideas were not “fully implemented” at Manchester United. Amorim was fired in January after only 14 months in command at Old Trafford.
Amorim was appointed from Sporting Lisbon in November 2024. He supervised United’s worst season in 51 years, including a defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
In the Premier League, Amorim had the lowest victory ratio (32%), goals conceded per game ratio (1.53) and clean sheet ratio (15%) of any United manager.

Amorim was fired during an angry post-Leeds press conference at Elland Road, during which he suggested that other club employees focus on their own employment.
Adelio Candido served as one of Amorim’s two assistant coaches during his tenure. The 29-year-old was an important member of Amorim’s staff, overseeing player warm-ups prior to games.
In an interview with The Ball, Candido was asked what he enjoyed about his time coaching at United and what he disliked about the experience. He said, “Experience is always experience; whether the outcome is positive or negative, we always learn something.
“In Manchester, I particularly liked the city and how the fans experience football, with a concentration on the project rather than the immediate outcome. What I disliked the most was the notion that our ideas had not been properly realized.”
Amorim’s formation was a topic of discussion throughout his stint at the club. He was adamant about his 3-4-3 formation and only changed it after an intervention from Jason Wilcox.
The 41-year-old’s coaching staff was also questioned for their inexperience. When asked if being part of such a youthful coaching staff helped him cope with heavy strain.
