Rooney tight-lipped over De Gea being implicated in sex abuse case

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has refused to be drawn on the situation regarding teammate David De Gea.

Reports in the Spanish press surfaced earlier in the day implicating the goalkeeper in a sex abuse case, although he stressed his innocence when addressing the media shortly after the news broke.

Rooney, who is with the England squad ahead of their Euro 2016 opener against Russia tomorrow night, was asked at a press conference of his own about De Gea’s predicament and unsurprisingly replied by saying: ‘It’s nothing to do with me’.

There had been speculation that the Spanish Football Federation had chosen to send De Gea home from France, therefore missing the tournament, but it appears those rumours were false and he’s revealed his desire to remain with the squad for the duration of their stay.

He will be hoping this saga doesn’t affect his chances of dislodging Iker Casillas as La Roja’s number one for the finals and Vicente Del Bosque’s team selection for the opener against Czech Republic will be eagerly anticipated.

De Gea enjoyed yet another productive season in between the sticks and his penalty save from Romelu Lukaku in the FA Cup semi-final proved vital as it allowed United to overcome Everton en route to winning the trophy.
