Real Madrid go four years without a La Liga title for the first time in 22-years

Real Madrid’s failure to catch rivals Barcelona in the La Liga title race means they have now gone four years without a title for the first time in 22 years.

At one stage Zinedine Zidane and his side were 12 points behind Barcelona and the title seemed like a formality for Luis Enrique’s men.

But thanks to a string of 12 wins in a row, Real Madrid were able to draw level with Barcelona going into the final day of the season.

With Atletico Madrid losing the weekend before it was a straight shoot-out between Real and Barcelona and it looked good for the side from the capital when they took the lead early.

But Barcelona kept their cool and they won 3-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Luis Suarez to ensure they lifted the title and kept up Madrid’s barren run of titles.

With Barcelona winning three of the last four titles, as well as one going to Atletico, Madrid are still waiting for a title.

Carlo Ancelotti did win the Champions League in 2014, and Zidane could emulate that achievement when he takes on Atletico in the final on May 28, but the pressure will be on the Frenchman to secure a league title while he’s in charge.
