RB Leipzig Chief Confirms Christopher Nkunku Transfer To Chelsea

RB Leipzig sporting director has confirmed that French forward Chirstopher Nkunku will join Chelsea in the summer.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea agreed to sign the 25-year-old in October, and Leipzig appear to have confirmed the deal is likely to be completed by the end of the season.

At the end of September, it was revealed that the France international had already undergone a medical and signed pre-contract terms with the Blues ahead of a move in 2023.

Nkunku, who only recently extended his contract with Leipzig until 2026, was scheduled to travel to Qatar with the France squad for the 2022 World Cup, but he was forced to withdraw due to a serious knee injury sustained in training.

Nkunku’s situation cast doubt on whether his move to Stamford Bridge would go ahead, but Chelsea are said to have stepped up their pursuit in December, and they now have a £52m deal in place.

“The signs are very clear that he’s moving to Chelsea,” Eberl told Bild, as Nkunku prepares to leave the Red Bull Arena after establishing a reputation as one of Europe’s most prolific attackers.

The 25-year-old spent nine years at PSG before joining Leipzig in 2019, where he has since amassed 64 goals and 51 assists in 159 appearances across all competitions.

Nkunku directly contributed to 55 goals in 52 games in 2021-22, scoring 35 and setting up 20 more, and his efforts helped Die Roten Bullen win the DFB-Pokal.

Prior to his knee injury, the Frenchman had started the 2022-23 season in fine form, with 17 goals and four assists in 23 games, and he is not expected to return until the end of February.
