Rayo Vallecano Stun League Leaders Barcelona 2-1

At a boisterous Vallecas, Rayo Vallecano outperformed Barcelona on Wednesday, shocking the powerless LaLiga leaders with a 2-1 victory.

Although, with just seven games left, Xavi Hernandez’s Barcelona are still 11 points ahead of Real Madrid in second place.

After losing to Girona on Tuesday, the champions’ chances of retaining the title are all but dead, despite Barcelona following suit in the capital.

Meanwhile, Barcelona have only won one of their past four league games, a narrow victory against Atletico on Sunday, as Xavi’s team struggles to the finish line and their first league title since 2019.

Before the game, the coach of Barcelona cautioned his players to be mindful of Rayo’s threat, but they disregarded his advice.

In their last four league encounters, the Catalans have failed to defeat the Madrid team.

“The league is not finished, this is the problem — we have to deserve LaLiga, today we deserved defeat,” Xavi told reporters.

“What annoys me is that today we did not compete how the game required us to. But we will get players back (from injury), there’s another game on Saturday.

“Here a lot of teams have lost, and others have had a lot of trouble winning. Luckily, there’s another game on Saturday.”
