Pundits Clash Over Whether De Zerbi Could Succeed Klopp At Liverpool

Graeme Souness and Simon Jordan reportedly clashed with differing opinions over whether Roberto De Zerbi could replace Jurgen Klopp as manager of Liverpool.

After Graham Potter moved to Chelsea in September 2022, De Zerbi, 46, arrived at the AMEX Stadium and quickly made an enormous impression.

The Italian made sure the Seagulls qualified for the Europa League for the first time in club history in his first season by leading them to a top-six Premier League finish.

Viewers have found De Zerbi’s possession-based style of play appealing. And as a result, he has been linked to transfers to Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

Souness, who previously criticized Brighton for selecting De Zerbi because of the Italian’s inexperience with English football, thinks the Italian will be a contender to succeed Klopp this summer.

“It’s the style of football he’s playing that makes him attractive and I enjoy watching them,” Souness told talkSPORT.

“You look at Liverpool at the end of the season and you get that job, what a dream job that is.

Will he be in the frame? Yeah, because of the brand of football he plays, that will be attractive to people. Is [Xabi] Alonso the favourite? I believe he’s talking to Bayern Munich”.

Jordan, the former owner of Crystal Palace, was a little less optimistic about De Zerbi’s chances of joining the Anfield club ahead of next season.

“No, I can’t see him being interviewed by Liverpool,” he said. “His name is not in the frame, he’s either going to be given the job or he’s not going to be given the job.
