Hull City are reportedly set to instantly lose shock points after gaining promotion back to the Premier League.

The Tigers managed to climb into the Championship top six on the last day of the season, but they weren’t anticipated to contend for promotion to the top division.

To prevent possibly losing points in the Premier League, the Tigers must now sell players by the end of the month.

According to the BBC Sport, Hull’s profit and sustainability (PSR) computation shows that they overspent by roughly £6 million.

That might result in a six-point penalty under English Football League rules.

At first, it was thought that the club’s excessive spending was due to promotion bonuses that were triggered by the team’s 1-0 victory over Boro in the Championship match at Wembley.

However, it has since been known that these payments are, in effect, ghosted in the accounts for the computation during the promotion season.

Regardless of whether Hull won the play-off final, PSR issues would have arisen.

The East Yorkshire team will have to consider more than just their opening games when the Premier League fixture is released on Friday morning (10:00 BST).

Hull’s Losses Were ‘Modest’ Due To Players Sale

Hull’s losses have been “relatively modest” in recent seasons, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke with BBC Sport.

However, that was only made possible by their transfer business, which resulted in £33 million from the sales of defender Jacob Greaves and winger Jaden Philogene.

“Their numbers were good partly due to the fact that they had some very successful player sales and they contribute towards covering losses,” said Maguire.

“The club lost just under £19m in 2023-24, and around £10m in 2024-25 which, before you count things like infrastructure, academy and community, suggests an overspend in 2025-26 somewhere in the region of £17m.”
