Premier League agree biggest ever overseas TV deal with Chinese company

The Premier League have agreed a major television deal with a Chinese company which could be worth up to £560 million, making it the league’s biggest ever overseas broadcast agreement.

According to the BBC the Premier League has negotiated terms with Chinese video streaming service PPTV with a three-year contract being signed to show the top English division in China.

If the finances of the deal are accurate then it means that the deal is worth ten times more than the Premier League’s current China television agreement.

The £560m over three years agreement comes to roughly £186m per season which exceeds the current largest overseas deal which is held with American media outlet NBC, who pay approximately £135m a year.

China’s President Xi Jinping has pushed for businesses in the county to invest heavily in the world of football in an effort to make the nation into one of the sport’s major superpower.

The development of the Chinese Super League has seen millions of pounds spent on foreign players over the last year, while a number of sides across Europe are now controlled or invested in by individuals from the Asian country.

President XI has also set China the goal of becoming the world’s biggest sports economy by 2025.
