PGMOL Told To Take Action On Arsenal Tactic Used Against Man United

PGMOL have reportedly been asked to intervene against goalkeepers being overrun at corners following an Arsenal goal against Manchester United.

Former referee Mark Clattenburg is sure that in order to prevent offensive teams from taking advantage of such circumstances, referees must take a tougher stance.

Mikel Merino’s debated goal on a corner in the 84th minute demonstrated the Gunners’ set-piece brilliance despite their 3-2 loss.

United’s goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, was overpowered and was unable to successfully intercept the ball, allowing the Spaniard to capitalize.

Clattenburg believes that the Premier League and Professional Game Match Officials Limited should forbid such methods.

Clattenburg Wants Stricter Rules On Corners

According to the Mirror, Clattenburg is advocating for stricter regulation of this situation. According to the former Gladiators referee, giving out more free kicks will quickly put an end to this strategy.

Furthermore, the retired official believes this would simply bring the game in line with how football is played in European competitions. “It’s clear that this has become more common when set-piece coaches were employed by clubs to get any advantage possible,” Clattenburg told United In Focus.

“It’s something the PGMOL and Premier League need to address, and any blocking on the goalkeeper must be punished by a free-kick.”

“Yes, more fouls will be given initially, but when teams realise they won’t be allowed to use this tactic, they’ll stop.

“We see this tactic used less in the Champions League as referees punish more!” However, not everyone agrees that goalkeepers require additional protection from players crowding their area.”
