“You have to open to see if it’s good” – Guardiola compares Gabriel Jesus to a watermelon

Pep Guardiola has somewhat bizarrely compared Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus to a watermelon, after the Brazilian’s terrific showing against West Ham United.

Gabriel scored and provided an assist for City on his first Premier League start for the club against the Hammers , aiding his side to a dominant 4-0 win at the London Stadium.

The 19-year-old was very impressive on his full debut, and Guardiola has hailed Gabriel’s ability and drive to perform well for the Citizens.

The Catalan boss also said that his latest recruit is like a watermelon, suggesting he had to wait and see if the striker was going to be any good or not.

Guardiola said on Gabriel (via BBC Sport): “It’s like watermelons. You have to open to see if it’s good or not.

“But he’s had a good mentality, so aggressive. He has dreams. He wants to become something in world football.”

It remains to be seen if Gabriel did enough to retain his place for City’s next match, after replacing Sergio Aguero in the side, but the teenager is clearly set for great things.
