Norwich City Appoint David Wagner As New Head Coach

Norwich City have confirmed the appointment of David Wagner as the club’s new head coach on a 12-month rolling contract.

Dean Smith was dismissed by the Canaries board in the final weeks of 2022 despite the team’s attempts to qualify for the Championship playoffs.

However, after starting the season as title favourites, the Englishman was sacked a day after the 2-1 defeat at Luton Town.

Norwich have only collected one point from home games against Reading and Watford since then, leaving the club in 11th place in the table.

Wagner, who previously played in the Championship with Huddersfield Town, has been named as Smith’s replacement by the East Anglian club.

Wagner led the Terriers to a surprise promotion to the Premier League in 2016-17 and then kept the minnows in the top flight the following season.

The 51-year-old has since worked for Schalke 04 and Young Boys, leaving the latter in March after the club failed to retain their Swiss title.

Nevertheless, Wagner returns to English football after a 10-month absence, tasked with leading a team that has won just three of their last 15 league games.

Wagner said of his new position: “This is a very special and proud moment for me. To be here, back in England, as the head coach of Norwich City is a huge honour.

“I’ve very pleased with what I have seen so far. The facilities at the Lotus Training Centre are top class. We now have to look forward and work extremely hard.

Wagner’s first game in charge will be against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup third round on January 8.
