Morocco star Amrabat fumes at ref after he ‘asked for Ronaldo’s shirt’

Morocco’s Watford midfielder Nordin Amrabat has made the extraordinary claim that match referee Mark Geiger asked Cristiano Ronaldo for his shirt during Wednesday’s game.

Amrabat – who played despite suffering concussion in his country’s opening World Cup game last week- told Dutch TV after Morocco’s defeat to Portugal: ‘I do not know what he is used to, but he was very impressed by Cristiano Ronaldo, and I hear from Pepe that he asked in the first half if he should have his shirt.

‘What are we talking about? At the World Cup? It’s not a circus here.’

On Wednesday night there was no corroboration of the claim and Portuguese media officials did not respond when asked for comment.

Amrabat remains contracted to Watford but spent last season on loan in Spain at Leganes.

He was not expected to play yesterday but appeared wearing a scrum cap which he removed half an hour in to the game.

Morocco coach Herve Renard said: ‘I’m not a doctor. Medical reports are read by competent people.

‘I’m not competent in medical matters and they take their own responsibility and so does the player.

‘I think he did an exceptional and outstanding match.’
