Monaco Agree €18m Transfer Deal With Liverpool For Minamino

Monaco and Liverpool have agreed a deal worth €18m (£15.5m) for Japan forward Takumi Minamino.

The fee includes an initial €15m (£13m/$16m), plus an additional £2.6m (€3m) in performance-related add-ons.

Minamino, who made 24 appearances for the Reds last season and scored 10 goals, is currently awaiting the completion of his personal contract and a medical  before moving to Stade Louis II.

Why Is Liverpool Selling Minamino?

Minamino was a major contributor in the Reds’ two domestic cup victories last season, scoring the most goals in both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

But he didn’t play in either final, and he only made one Premier League start all season, out of a total of nine.

He expressed his frustration with that role to Sanspo lately, saying that he “felt motivated by regret and anger every day”.

“I’ve never had this much time as a player,”  he continued.  “It was difficult to maintain the condition and connect with my feelings.

“Many of the games I played weren’t of interest to anyone.”

It was obvious that the 27-year-old would have less opportunities this term because players like Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez had already signed prior to the new season.

Southampton, with whom he spent four months on loan during the 2020-21 season, held talks previously this week, while Leeds, managed by Jesse Marsch, his former Salzburg boss, also inquired, but it is Monaco who have made their move and now seem to be in line to sign the player.
