Marcos Alonso ‘To Discuss Contract Renewal With Barcelona In February’

Marcos Alonso will reportedly remain at Barcelona, though the deal over his renewal is yet to be finalised.

After a protracted saga caused by Barcelona’s financial problems, Alonso finally left Chelsea for Camp Nou near the end of the summer transfer window.

To help meet certain criteria, the Catalan giants insisted on a one-year contract, leaving Alonso vulnerable to a summer exit.

Nevertheless, the 32-year-old has emerged as a key squad member of Xavi’s squad, even being deployed in a new role as a centre-back.

Alonso has appeared in 11 starts and seven substitute appearances for the La Liga leaders, with 10 of those appearances coming in Spain’s top flight.

Alonso has also contributed two goals, the most notable coming on New Year’s Eve in a 1-1 draw with neighbours Espanyol.

Sport reports that it has been determined that Alonso will continue to play for the first team in the long run.

According to the report, Xavi has been impressed with Alonso’s performances, and he also brings valuable experience to a young squad.

Furthermore, it is stated that Alonso’s willingness to accept lower terms than he had at Stamford Bridge has worked in his favour.

The alleged development comes as it appears that Alonso will not see regular game time on the left side of defence due to the emergence of Alejandro Balde.

Although the youngster has appeared at right-back on occasion, Jordi Alba is also in the squad and plays ahead of Alonso on the left flank.

While Alba could leave the club before the 2023-24 season, Barcelona is eager to offer Balde a new long-term contract.
