Man Utd Urged To Pursue Emiliano Martinez After David De Gea Contract Decision

Manchester United have been asked to recruit Argentina World Cup standout Emiliano Martinez as a long-term replacement for David de Gea.

Martinez’s profile has skyrocketed in recent weeks as a result of his outstanding performances for Argentina in the World Cup.

He made a brilliant extra-time save to deny Randal Kolo Muani before his exploits in the penalty shoot-out helped his team win over France.

The 30-year-old won the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper in the tournament and is now a national hero in Argentina.

When the celebrations are over and Martinez travels to England, he plans to meet with Aston Villa regarding his future.

Other clubs have taken note of Martinez’s performances in Qatar, with Bayern Munich among those interested in signing him. Manchester United, who must make a choice on De Gea, could join them.

De Gea’s current contract ends at the end of the season. According to Mirror Football, United have begun discussions about extending it. Former England international Jay Bothroyd believes Martinez would be an excellent replacement.

He told Sky Sports News: “He (De Gea) is a top keeper, he had a good season last year. But he’s on a lot of money, he’s one of the highest paid players in the Premier League. I think he’s on about £350,000 a week, that’s a lot for a goalkeeper. Now, for example, if I was Man United, I’d be looking at other options, like you would.

“You would have to look around, Martinez being one of them. Yes, he’s at Aston Villa, but that could potentially be an option for them.”

Martinez is under contract with Aston Villa until June 2027, putting the Premier League club in a good position to turn down offers from other clubs.
